Learning League 2011

May 23rd weather update:  Cloudy with 100% chance of game on!

What is the learning league?

A coed league focused on learning all aspects of ultimate frisbee, including throwing and catching and basic offensive and defensive strategies.  Each session begins with some warm-up exercises and drills, followed in the later sessions by scrimmages to work on those skills.  This is a great place to learn fundamentals, get some exercise, and have fun while you're at it!

Who can sign up?

The league is open to all, but is geared for novice players.  If you are a veteran player, feel free to come down and help teach!

When and where?

The Learning League meets Monday nights, from the end of April through the end of May at Danehey Park in Cambridge, just behind the Fresh Pond Mall and a short walk from the Alewife T station.  See the details table below for specific dates and field location for this season.

What about Summer and Fall?

The learning league is offered only in the spring. If you are a beginner and are interested in playing ultimate frisbee in the Summer, Fall or Winter, check out the Hat Leagues. You will be asked to rate yourself when registering for the league and that information will be used to place you on a team. Many teams in the Hat Leagues have 1-3 beginner players on them. Note that the Hat Leagues are more of a playing environment then a teaching one.

How do I register?

Applications for the Learning League are generally available around early-mid April (about 2-4 weeks before Learning League starts). For notification when applications (and details) for future BUDA leagues are available, join the BUDA mailing list. Once applications are available, you will have to log in to the players page and then click on the link to register. When you register, please print and fax or mail the waiver by clicking the "Get Waiver" link. We prefer online sign-up but if for some reason that's not an option for you, you can also show up at any learning league session to sign up and pay (by check made out to BUDA).

What do I need to bring?

Bring sneakers and clothing comfortable for running, but make sure you are dressed warmly enough that you can rest while we explain drills, rules, and strategy.  Bring a water bottle (there's also a water fountain at the park). Every learning league participant receives two t-shirts (one light, one dark, so we can divide into teams) and a frisbee; please bring these to each session.

What if it's raining?

If it's wet or raining, check this web page. Any weather-related announcements will be posted on this page by 4pm on the day of a learning league session.

What if I can't make all the sessions?

Don't worry about missing a week; one of the coaches will be happy to help you catch up the following week.

I'm an experienced player.  Do you need volunteers?

Yes!  If you have solid forehand and backhand throws and want to teach new players, contact us at the email address below.
